The adventure begins

The adventure begins | Home | Lyon Bee Farm

We have jumped in with both feet, fearlessly going where no BEEK should go !! Welcome to our crazy journey with all its ups and downs. In all reality, there have been a lot of ups, and a few downs which luckily did not cost us anything but time.

To start our journey, we spent months reading, learning, and absorbing everything bee related we could find. Our Netflix account started having abandonment issues when we discovered beekeeping videos on YouTube LOL. We ordered 2 nucs, then excitedly started scanning the internet for equipment and everything we would need.

Quick note for those who do not wait well,… having your bee gear arrive months before you will get your nucs is enough to drive you crazy hahaha.

We decided to go with 8 frame medium boxes for our main hives, after listening to countless people advise that if you’re getting older, lighter lifting is a good choice. ( FYI – We are getting older, and we are glad we made this choice.) We like to shop locally if possible, and support small home based businesses, so we ordered our 8 hive bodies and the foundation and frames from a little place not too far from where we live. We figured that 8 boxes would allow us to make 4 double hives, and if all went well, we could make 2 splits and have 4 hives at the end of the summer.

We had no idea how wildfire this venture would be and how far and fast we would travel. We were expecting a horse and buggy ride through the park, and what we’ve been on is rocket ship flying through learning, trying, succeeding, failing, trying again, learning more, and BOX MAKING!!! Oh my gosh, we have been making boxes, feeder boxes, ladders, frames, foundation strips and so much more. Welcome to our journey. I hope we can share what we have learned, and help you on your own journey.
